Rick Majerus was a TV analyst and basketball coach at Marquette University, Ball State University, University of Utah, and Saint Louis University. While at Marquette University High School, he started coaching eighth graders at St. Sebastian Grade School in Milwaukee. Afterward, he coached freshmen boys at his school.
His most successful season was in the 1997-1998 season when the Utes finished as runners-up in the 1998 NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament. In 2019, Majerus was inducted into the College Basketball Hall of Fame.
After graduating from high school, Majerus became an assistant coach for the Marquette Warriors in 1971. He coached for 12 years, working under mentors Al McGuire and Hank Raymonds before becoming the head coach in 1983. While he was the head coach, he led the Warriors to a 56-35 record and three consecutive NIT appearances during his three seasons.
After serving three years as head coach at Marquette, Majerus became an assistant coach for the National Basketball Association’s Milwaukee Bucks during the 1986-1987 season, working under Coach Don Nelson.
From 1987-1989, he coached at Ball State University, setting a record of 43-17. The 1988-1989 team holds a record for the best men’s basketball season in Ball State University history. Majerus served as an assistant coach under Don Nelson for the U.S. national team during the 1994 FIBA World Championship, where they won a gold medal.
He left Utah in 2004 after 15 seasons and a 323-95 record, having most of his success since 1989, leaving a legacy. He took 12 teams to the NCAA tournament, winning at least one game in each. In December 2004, he was hired as coach of the University of Southern California basketball team.
Rick later worked as a studio and game analyst for ESPN from 2004 to 2007. In April 2007, Majerus got a head coach position at Saint Louis University but later, in August, paused his coaching career due to health problems. In November 2012, he retired from coaching with an overall NCAA record of 517-215. He passed away on December 1, 2012, after battling heart problems since 1989.
Some of his awards and honors include Basketball Times National Coach of the Year in 1991, Utah Sports Person of the Year in 1992 and 1997, and District Coach of the Year in 1991, 1993, 1995, and 1996, among others.
