I hated Vampire Academy. It is probably the worst YA live-action property I have ever encountered. The books are another matter. I can’t be the only one who despises the word ‘Dhampir.’ It’s dumb, and the fact that it comes from real-life folktales doesn’t change anything.

That being said, Mead’s book series is awesome. I rolled my eyes the first time I saw the cover because the first novel looked like any other Twilight rip-off, and I’ve read enough of those to last me a lifetime.

But you know what? Rose is far better than Bella, and once I realized that I liked her as a protagonist, I knew that I would enjoy the rest of this series. I was right.

If you have watched the Vampire Academy TV show and thought it was rubbish, you were right! But don’t let that put you off the books because they are much better, and a great read. I like the premise of the storyline but some of the details are a bit cringe. I love Rose as a character and Dimitri as a love interest! A few twists and turns but nothing hugely unpredictable.

If you read Twilight and liked it, or actually – even if you didn’t – give these books a go!
