Richard L. Proenneke was a wildlife photographer, author, conservationist, and naturalist who spent more than three decades living all alone in the wilds of Alaska.

He moved to the Twin Lakes region when he was 51, and using local materials, he constructed a log cabin entirely by hand.

Proenneke would develop a reputation for self-reliance and his craftsmanship with his minimalist lifestyle, showcasing a deep respect for a desire to live independently and simply, in addition to a deep respect for nature.

Before he moved to Alaska, Richard was a man who worked in a range of mechanical and technical roles. During the Second World War, he served in the U.S. Navy, where he got training as a diesel mechanic.

His frugal lifestyle and skill set made it possible for him to pursue wilderness living after early retirement. Richard Proenneke was known for his exemplary self-sufficiency. He gathered food, hunted, fished, built tools, furniture, and even refrigeration systems.

Proenneke documented his life on 8mm film and in journals, as he captured his process for building cabins, his encounters with wildlife, and daily routines. His records would ultimately become useful in the making of documentaries and books, such as the Alone in the Wilderness series.

Over time, Richard L. Proenneke would epitomize quiet strength and sustainable living. He passed on in 2003 and left his cabin to the National Park Service.
