Rhae Lynn Barnes
Rhae Lynn Barnes is a historian, author, editor, and public speaker. Her specialty is in the globalization of American popular culture, and she is the leading expert on the history of amateur blackface minstrelsy. Rhae's main areas of research and teaching are on the histories of racism, racial formation, gender, sexuality, book history, and cultural representation.
She grew up in California, where she studied at audition-only Orange County High School of the Arts. After high school, Rhae attended the University of California, where she earned her B.A. While at Berkeley, she served as the Editor-in-Chief of the Berkeley Poetry Review. She would then head to Harvard University, where she earned her Ph.D.
Barnes is the co-founder of U.S. History Scene, a teaching resource. This is part of her overall professional mission, which seeks to democratize history and allow for equitable access to education.
Rhae Lynn was one of three editors of
After Life: A Collective History of Loss and Redemption in Pandemic America. The other editors were Keri Leigh Merritt and Yohuru Williams. The book sought to tell the story of how Americans dealt with the COVID-19 pandemic, mass uprisings, and the events of January 6th.
She also co-edited
Roe v. Wade: Fifty Years After as part of the History in the Headlines series. The book gathers scholars, historians, and intellectuals to discuss the history and how the world changed after the decision.
