Rachel grew up as the class clown type while attending William Diamond Middle School and Lexington High School. She said that as she was performing in high school plays, she’d gravitate toward acting in comedies far more than in dramas.

She attended the National Theater Institute at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center during the fall of 1985 and graduated from Dartmouth in 1988. Rachel majored in psychology and drama and was a member of the improv comedy group Said and Done.

After graduating from Dartmouth, she moved to Chicago to study improv theater at ImprovOlympic and The Second City. She was a member of the main stage cast of The Second City comedy troupe for four years. She got the Joseph Jefferson Award for Best Actress in a Revue for the revues she performed in.

Her breakthrough role came as a cast member on Saturday Night Live for 7 years. During her time on the show, she portrayed various roles, including Debbie Downer. She’s occasionally returned to the show as a guest playing Senator Amy Klobuchar.

Her performance in POTUS: Or Behind Every Great Dumbass Are Seven Women Trying to Keep Him Alive earned her a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Play.
