I had two interesting experiences with Rachel Abbot. I tried to read ‘Only The Innocent,’ but I couldn’t get past the first few chapters for some reason. So, I put it down, took a week-long break, and then tried reading it again. On the second attempt, I saw the problem.
Initially, I thought the story was slow. But then I realized that I went into the novel thinking I was getting a police procedural because of the series title (DCI Tom Douglas). But Abbot treated me to a psychological thriller. Once I realized what I was reading, I was able to enjoy it for what it was.
Then I read ‘Kill Me Again’ a few weeks later, and this time, Abbot gave me relatively fast-paced, action-packed detective fiction. Now I’m really curious because I don’t know what to expect from this author.
