Characterizations is one of the best things I love about the works of RA Salvatore. While I think many people would find his writing problematic, I like that he does not shy away from writing about controversial themes such as race, social and economic backgrounds.
Drizzt the lead of the Forgotten Realms series has always been my favorite character ever since I started reading the books. He is a young dark elf that came into the world at a time when his house was busy trying to destroy another house and over the years he takes a central role in the affairs of his house.
One of the best books of the series has to be Sojourn which has some interesting insights on various social issues. While the novels are not that deep they are enjoyable and fun reads full of action scenes.
I am slowly inching closer and closer to Dungeons and Dragons. The franchise has been a significant part of my social circle for decades, but I’ve never engaged with it. I can’t even tell you what Dungeons and Dragons is. I thought it was a game, but someone clarified that it was actually a gaming system.
One of these days, I will sit down and play it. Salvatore will keep me entertained until that day comes. I started reading the Drizzt novels specifically because I knew they came from the D&D world, and I thought they would give me some insight into that universe.
I still don’t understand D&D. But Drizzt has secured a place on my list of the ten greatest fantasy characters, alongside Druss the Legend.
One of my new all-time favorite authors. He knows what readers want. Good stories, lots of action, magic, intrigue, and memorable characters. I focused more on reading the Dragonlance works of Weis and Hickman while growing up, and never got around to knowing Drizzt and the Companions. Now that I’m finally able to read more in my aging years, and have chosen to read books from my childhood that I never got a chance at reading, I am coming to see why Drizzt is one of the most popular and recognizable characters in fantasy literature. Having just read The Crystal Shard a couple of months ago, I’ve already devoured several novels and am working on The Halfling’s Gem right now. A shame that I waited so long.
most of the time when i pick up a salvatore book its read cover to cover … he’s not always the most friendly person to talk to but over all a decent guy..i’ve been reading drizzit since the beginning trough all the ups and downs and will miss him when he is finally put to rest (come close a few times)
