Philip Goff
Philip Goff is a British author, philosopher, and professor at Durham University in Britain.
Goff mainly focuses on the philosophy of consciousness and mind, asking questions about the nature of experience. He also emphasizes ideas that run counter to conventional scientific explanations and prompt people to reflect more on reality.
He is known as one of the biggest defenders of panpsychism, a view that human consciousness is the building block of the universe and that even the smallest particles may have it. He believes that panpsychism is a new way of thinking and understanding how consciousness arises beyond science.
Besides his books and academic articles, Philip Goff publishes articles in Scientific American and The Guardian. He has also appeared in public discussions, interviews, and podcasts, where he discusses philosophical issues and concepts in consciousness.
Outside of academia, Goff loves music and once sang in a band. He is also the co-host of the podcast
Mind Chat, in which he and his co-host debate and explore ideas about reality and the mind.
In his work,
Consciousness and Fundamental Reality, Philip Goff asks questions about reality and the philosophy of mind.
He argues that the traditional view of physicalism, which holds that everything is physical, is insufficient to explain consciousness. Goff explains the many challenges for physicalism and provides a new way of thinking, different from standard arguments.
He also examines Russellian monism, which always held that at a deeper level, the nature of matter may include consciousness. Some theorists from that school argue that consciousness is a critical component of the universe's structure, not something later introduced.
In 2022, Philip Goff published
Is Consciousness Everywhere?, a collection of essays on panpsychism.
The work draws on his previous work and includes contributions from thinkers, philosophers, and scientists who examined and challenged panpsychism from different perspectives.
Some of the essays argue that consciousness is everywhere, while others present opposing views or challenge traditional arguments.
