Philip Ashby
Philip Ashby (Philip James Conyers Ashby) was born on April 29th, 1970 and is currently 56 years old. Philip Ashby was born in Helensburgh, Scotland.
Philip Ashby is a former commando with the Royal Marines who is best known for his dramatic escape across the dense jungles of Sierra Leone in the year 2000.
Ashby made a name for himself in the Royal Marines, where he was trained for tough missions at sea and on land. Over the years, Ashby gained a lot of experience serving in tough environments where both endurance and skill were tested to the limit.
It was in 2000 that Philip Ashby found himself working on a United Nations mission in Sierra Leone following a horrific civil war. Things turned dangerous when several of his colleagues were captured following raids by rebel forces.
Facing the prospect of being surrounded, Philip Ashby and several of his colleagues decided to take matters into their own hands. Led by Phil, they escaped across dense jungles, avoiding capture in the harsh conditions. After traversing hostile lands for several days, they finally reached friendly territory.
Their escape was reported on global news media, where Ashby’s leadership and courage under pressure were highlighted.
Thereafter, Ashby continued to serve in the military and rose through the ranks in the Royal Marines to retire as a Major. He would then share his story, as he provided accounts of the resilience, survival, and the many challenges he had to deal with during the conflict in Sierra Leone.
Outside of his military service, Philip Ashby developed a reputation as a writer and speaker and provided insights into perseverance, leadership, and overcoming hardship. His story is one of the most dramatic examples of escape and survival.
In his memoir
Unscathed: Escape From Sierra Leone, Major Philip Ashby tells of the challenges he had to deal with to survive an unexpected and very dangerous situation in Sierra Leone.
Working with the United Nations to try to disarm rebels, he found himself in trouble when the rebels began taking hundreds hostage and killing peacekeepers.
Unarmed and outnumbered, Philip and his colleagues seemed doomed, but they refused to give up and tried to cross the jungle to get away from the rebels. Against overwhelming odds, he led his colleagues on a dangerous but daring journey to safety
