Peter J. Gilbertson

Peter J. Gilbertson is an American author of horror, fantasy, and science fiction books. He lives in Minneapolis with his wife and their kids.

His book Zombies at the Gates and Other Stories mixes horror and science fiction and covers a wide array of strange and scary ideas. Some of these ideas focus on the ugly reality of the undead, others explore the creepy supernatural forces, and a few have a take on futuristic tech worlds. Each story brings out a different tone and mood, which makes the collection feel varied and at the same time connected.

The first in the collection is Zombies at the Gate, which avoids the common survival cliches and takes a new approach to zombies. The undead in this story aren’t cool or heroic but instead appear as disturbing and unpleasant. This helps bring back the real fear and keeps the story original.

The second story Kids Chant the Damnedest Things switches into the supernatural horror-thriller territory where innocence collides with force beyond human understanding. Gilbertson builds tension simply through implication and creeping dread instead of spectacle. In the final story, Run Down at the Out of Body Shop he switches to speculative sci-fi and showcases worldbuilding as one of his strongest skills.

He creates a reality influenced by bold ideas about consciousness, identity, and technology. Gilbertson provides us with just enough details to initiate a spark of curiosity and, at the same time, to ensure that the story moves along smoothly.

What makes the book unique is the fact that it also sparks the spirit of other literary works like Ghost in the Shell, and Gilbertson has created characters and settings that fit the narratives, and at the same time keep the story engaging.

His work reflects the influence of the classic and modern genre voices and at the same time presents ideas that feel fresh and modern.

In the end, Zombies at the Gates and Other Tales proves to us that short story fiction can still deliver memorable storytelling, and Gilbertson fills the book with creativity and compelling concepts for both fans of horror and science fiction books.
