Beyond his music career, McDonald shares about his personal challenges such as his deep-seated insecurity, struggles with alcohol and drug addiction, and the highs and lows of celebrity. He often experienced seizures, blackouts and serious health conditions as a result of his long drug abuse. He managed to turn his life around despite all the struggles.
It also explores how a promoter's mistake resulted in him being nicknamed as known as Michael rather than “Mike” his preferred name. McDonald also explores the importance of family in his life and reflects on his relationships with his siblings, parents, aunt, and grandmother as well as his longtime marriage to his beloved wife, Amy and their two children. He reflects on the ups and downs they have experienced together.
What a Fool Believes was born from a series of Zoom conversations between Reiser and McDonald. It’s an engaging and deeply moving memoir that provides an insight to McDonald's life and career and it's a great read for music fans and anyone interested in celebrity stories.
