Paul Eddy was a celebrated investigative journalist who was known for his relentless drive, meticulous attention to truth, and razor-sharp curiosity when it came to uncovering significant stories.
It would be at the
Sunday Times that he would come into the limelight as he led the Insight team, known for pieces on crime, corruption, and espionage as an editor. Driven by a formidable curiosity and forensic approach to journalism, he would become a very popular figure.
Among his peers, he was revered as one of the best journalists of his generation. He developed a reputation for digging into stories with courage and precision as he set benchmarks for accuracy. During his stint with
The Sunday Times, he worked on investigations into interrogation methods by the Israelis and conducted forensic work on the Brighton bombing of 1984.
In 1985, Paul Eddy left The Sunday Times, even though he still worked for the
Sunday Times Magazine, producing investigative pieces for several years, as he demonstrated his commitment to producing meaningful stories.
Eddy would carry over his traits of intellectual honesty and the pursuit of hidden truths into his fiction writing career. Nonetheless, while he achieved a lot as an author, his main identity was still in his firsthand experience as a journalist and the journalistic discipline he developed.
Upon his death in 2009, colleagues wrote many tributes portraying him as a passionate, loyal, and fearless man who was always driven to publish complex stories that most people did not have the discipline or courage to do.
In the year 2000, Paul Eddy published the work
Flint, which tells the story of Grace, who is viciously attacked by a psychotic man while trying to catch Frank Harling, a vicious money launderer.
Grace is left scarred and to fight the trauma, she goes to a plastic surgeon to get back her looks, even though the higher-ups are not convinced that her personality had also been mutilated in the attack.
She has never been afraid of working in dangerous circumstances and insists on getting back on the firing line to track down the psychotic man who had tried to take her out. But will she be able to keep it together, or will she be overwhelmed as her boss fears?
In her second Grace Flint work,
Flint’s Law, Paul Eddy follows Grace Flint, the Detective Inspector, who is working on a sting operation, hoping to entrap Karl Grober, a shady money laundering criminal.
However, things start to go wrong as targets escape, an agent dies, and her husband is discovered to be a traitor. Furious at the betrayal, she goes after him across Europe and the US, working with agents whose instincts could not have been sharper.
It is a story that shows that even the best detectives can sometimes be surprised by lies and love.
Making a shift toward business, Paul Eddy published
Destination Disaster, in which he explores the fight between
Lockheed Martin and
McDonnell Douglas over big commercial aircraft.
McDonnell blocked the L-1011 from gaining widespread use, as they instead pursued the DC-10. However, the latter had a horrible safety record, resulting in some tragic crashes.
It is a work that shows how the future of aviation was shaped not by safety but by business politics, which had some tragic results.
