Paul Butler
Paul Butler (Paul Delano Butler) was born on January 15th, 1961 and is currently 64 years old. Paul Butler was born in Chicago, Illinois, USA. Butler attended Yale University where he received a B.A. degree and Harvard University where he received a J.D. degree.
Paul Delano Butler is an American former prosecutor, lawyer, and law professor at the Law Center of Georgetown University. At the latter, he teaches critical theory, criminal law, race relations law, and criminal procedure. He has made a name for himself as a leading criminal law scholar in jury nullification and race studies.
Early in his career, he clerked for US District Court Judge Mary Johnson Lowe. He would then find employment with the Washington D.C.-based
Williams & Connolly law firm, where he was a specialist in civil litigation and white collar criminal defense.
After several years in private legal practice, Butler worked for the
US Department of Justice, where he was known for being a specialist in public corruption. While working for the government, he was also a special assistant US attorney who prosecuted gun and drug cases.
Paul Butler’s work has been published in prestigious publications, including the
UCLA Law Review,
Yale Law Journal,
Stanford Law Review, and
Harvard Law Review. He has also penned a column for the
Legal Times and numerous opinion articles for the likes of
The Dallas Morning News,
The Washington Post, and the
Los Angeles Times.
He is a regular lecturer for the
NAACP and the
ABA in addition to community organizations, law schools, and colleges across the United States. Before
Blackprof.com was shut down in 2009, he regularly contributed to the publication.
In addition to being a visiting professor at the Law School at the University of Pennsylvania, he is also a member of the
American Law Institute. He also has a
Distinguished Faculty Service Award, which he earned from his Georgetown Law graduating class at least three times over the years.
Paul Butler published his most popular work,
Chokehold, in 2017. As a former prosecutor, he explains how the US justice system is tilted against black men, as it is intended to punish and control rather than protect them.
Using data, he asserts that policing practices and laws are a chokehold on black masculinity as they encourage violence and racial profiling. He also addresses community safety and black on black violence, which he believes can be dealt with without over-policing.
He believes that reforms would not be enough and that what is needed is an overhaul of the system and a national conversation on justice, policing, and race.
Earlier in 2009, Paul Butler had published his debut novel
Let’s Get Free. In this novel, he explored how the justice system meets ordinary citizens through encounters with the police, witnesses, and jurors.
He shows what it means to do right in a corrupt system through sometimes controversial and ground-breaking methods such as refusing to work in the system as a prosecutor or voting not guilty in drug cases to protest injustice.
