One Direction
One Direction is a pop boy band that was formed in London back in 2010. They consisted of Zayn Malik (who left in 2015), Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson, and Harry Styles. By the time they went on hiatus in 2016, they became one of the bestselling boy bands of all time.
They signed with Syco Records (Simon Cowell’s label) after they formed and placed 3rd in the 7th series of
The X Factor in 2010. Propelled to global success by social media, their 5 albums have topped charts in several countries and have generated hit singles. With the release of Four, they became the first band to have each of their first four albums debut at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart.
The group auditioned as solo candidates for the 2010 series of
The X Factor. They each failed to progress in the “Boys” category during the bootcamp stage of the competition, however instead got put together to form a 5 piece boy band, thus qualifying for the “Groups” category.
It was Nicole Scherzinger, not Simon Cowell, that played the most significant role in forming the band.
The 5 got together for 2 weeks in order to rehearse and get to know each other better. It was Harry that came up with the name for the band.
They were Simon’s final act in the competition in just the first four weeks of the live shows, and he said they were confident and fun, like a gang of friends, while being sort of fearless too.
