During his NFL years, he was often referred to as “Juice” since his initials could stand for orange juice in addition to the fact that he was known for his energetic runs.

While he was in the NFL, he developed a reputation as one of the best running backs in the league. In 1973, he broke the record for the 2000-yard running mark with 2003 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns. For his exploits, he won the “Bart Bell Award” and the “NFL MVP Award.”

In fact, he was a professional actor first before he played professional football. His first appearance was when he had a small role in the movie Dragnet.

As he was winding down his professional football career, he got into broadcasting and was part of the Monday Night Football crew on NBC as an analyst. He held the job on and off from 1978 until 1994 which is when he was let go after he was charged with murder.

In 1995, O.J. Simpson published his first book I Want to Tell You: My Response to Your Letter, Your Messages, Your Questions.

He published the book while waiting for his jury trial and in it, he provides his reflections, thoughts, and commentary, which he does alongside the thoughts and feelings from the thousands of letters he got from his fans across the United States while he sat in a Los Angeles County jail.

He bares his heart about racism, his innocence, religion, his life with Nicole Brown Simpson, spousal abuse, his kids, the Judicial system, and the media.

In 2006, Simpson published If I Did It.

Written twelve years after the heinous murder of Nicole Brown, O.J. Simpson intended for the work to be a hypothetical on how he would have killed his wife and her friend. There was public uproar over O.J. potentially benefitting from the book, forcing the publisher to shelve it. The courts ultimately granted the rights of the book to the Goldman family.

In 2007, the Goldman family published a new edition of the book that also came with commentary by O.J.’s ghostwriter, a member of the Goldman legal team, and several of the Goldmans. The new edition came with fascinating insights into the life and times of O.J. Simpson.
