Noura Erakat

Noura Erakat (Noura Saleh Erakat) was born on January 16th, 1980 and is currently 46 years old. Noura Erakat was born in Alameda County, CA, USA. Erakat attended the University of California, Berkeley where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree and a JD degree and Georgetown University where she received an LLM degree.

Noura Erakat is a Rutgers University professor of Criminal Justice and Africana Studies. He is also a distinguished scholar who has produced works in Palestinian studies, humanitarian law, national security, critical race theory, and human rights.

Outside of her books, Noura Erakat has published more than 24 chapters and academic articles in major outlets such as Oxford Bibliographies in International Law, American Quarterly, and American Journal of International Law.

Noura’s scholarship extends into public policy. She has been a co-chair of an independent task force on US arms transfers to Israel and documented how these were used to violate international and American laws.

She worked for Jadaliya as a co-founding editor, the DC Palestinian Film and Arts Festival, and was on the editorial board of the Journal of Palestine Studies and Human Geography.

Over the course of her career, Noura Erakat has blended cultural work, advocacy, and scholarship. She has been a legal advocate for Palestinian refugee rights and worked for a US Congressional Subcommittee as a legal counsel. She has also been the producer of several documentaries, such as Black Palestinian Solidarity.

Her writing has been featured in prestigious publications such as Al Jazeera, The Washington Post, The Nation, and The New York Times. She has also appeared on major networks such as NPR, CNN, BBC, MSNBC, and Fox News as a media commentator.
Noura is a fellow of Brown and Harvard and was made a University of Ghent Amnesty International Chair.

In 2019, Noura Erakat published her debut work, Justice for Some, in which she asserts that international law has failed to protect Palestinians and instead has advanced Israeli interests.

She goes back to pivotal moments such as the Balfour Declaration of 1917 to the modern era wars in Gaza, as she shows how the law is often shaped by power and politics rather than being neutral. She shows examples of how laws of War and the Oslo Process have failed to illustrate her point.

She asserts that international law can only become effective if backed by political movements.

Turning to politics, Noura Erakat published the work Trump’s Return in 2025, as she examines his path back into the White House, including his strategies for resistance and the coalition that made his return possible.

The work explores the uneasy alliance between Trump and the nativists and tech billionaires, even as it critiques Biden’s failure to tackle inequality. It exposes the falsehood of the fentanyl invasion and the repression perpetrated by the US and imperial practices in Palestine.

Additional essays deal with progressive federalism, labor, money in politics, settler colonialism, Lula’s success in Brazil, natalism, and Syria’s trauma.
