Norman Bridwell
Norman Bridwell (Norman Ray Bridwell) was born on February 15th, 1928. Norman passed away December 12th, 2014 at 86 years old. Norman Bridwell was born in Kokomo, Indiana, USA. Bridwell attended Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis.
Norman Ray Bridwell was an American author and illustrator best known for creating the
Clifford the Big Red Dog book series. His books have been loved by generations of children and have sold millions of copies worldwide.
Bridwell started his career as a freelance commercial artist in New York, but struggled financially while supporting his wife and young daughter. In 1962, he put together a portfolio and tried to find work as a children's book illustrator. However, he was rejected by about 15 publishers. While visiting Harper & Row, an editor, who didn’t think his artwork was strong enough on its own, suggested he create a story based on one of his drawings. The drawing featured a young girl with a giant bloodhound-like dog. That simple idea became
Clifford the Big Red Dog.
The first
Clifford book was published in 1963 and became a massive success. Over the years, more than 75
Clifford books (some not written by Bridwell) were released. They inspired three animated TV series, a live-action movie, a stage musical, and a wide range of merchandise. Clifford is the series publisher official mascot of Scholastic.
Bridwell also wrote and illustrated
The Witch Next Door, first published in 1965. He had originally brought it to his editor alongside a new
Clifford book, intending it as an extra idea he had thrown together the night before. Surprisingly, the book became one of his most popular works and led to a six-book series about the friendly witch character.
In addition to
Clifford and
The Witch Next Door, Bridwell wrote many other children's books, such as
The Zany Zoo (1963),
What Do They Do When It Rains? (1969),
How to Care for Your Monster (1970), and
A Tiny Family (1974). His books have been printed in 13 languages, with more than 126 million copies sold worldwide.
Through his work, Bridwell brought joy to countless children and created one of the most recognizable characters in children's literature. His legacy continues to live on through
Clifford the Big Red Dog, who remains a beloved figure in books, television, and beyond.
