Nadine Fonseca
Nadine Fonseca is best known as a children's fiction author and founder of the multimedia educational company
Mighty Kind. She has said that her mission as an author is to build a more inclusive and kinder world for kids.
Nadine uses storytelling to impart important values to children. As part of the
Mighty Kind organization, she works to connect learning about fairness, race, and culture with the idea of kindness.
She draws from her profile as a mother of four, a wife, a biracial Latina, and a neurodivergent in the writing of her books. Nadine Fonseca is also a huge believer that self-love and empathy are critical in the quest to change the world.
She encourages families to imagine, talk, and care for one another, and asserts that even small acts, such as hair braiding, are very meaningful.
In her first work,
Only A Trenza Away, Nadine Fonseca tells of how her father used to tell stories of magical beings while braiding her hair. Sometimes her braid would turn into a vine she could use to swing through the jungle, while at other times it would be a Double Dutch jump rope.
But one night, her father cannot braid her hair, and Xia worries she may have to face the many challenges of life alone. Her father reassures her that even when he is not there, the strength, courage, and love he wove into her braids will never let her down.
In her second work,
If You Ever Need a Friend, Nadine Fonseca tells the story of Joaquin, who has been having a terrible day at school. He was left out of the soccer team, he cannot speak up, and finds himself all alone at recess.
One day, while he is on the playground slide, he sees a shimmery glow and follows it into a forest full of spirit animals. Imogen, his friend, shows him how to use the magical animals to deal with emotions.
He learns to understand his needs, and when he returns to school, he no longer feels alone or invisible.
