N.K. Jemisin is one of those authors I was primed to dislike. I always steer clear of political conversations, especially where science fiction and fantasy are concerned. And yet, Jemisin’s name was a common feature of every politically driven argument I came across in my literary circles.

It was all the encouragement I needed to stay away from her. And I would have continued to avoid Jemisin if a close friend hadn’t gifted me ‘The Fifth Season.’ Then he spent the next month hounding me about my opinion, which, surprisingly, couldn’t have been more positive.

My appreciation for the author has grown with each book of hers that I’ve read. I heard some pushback against The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms, but I loved it. Jemisin’s strongest skill is her world-building. She creates worlds and cultures that feel genuinely alien. I can’t believe Hollywood hasn’t adapted any of her novels yet. They are rife with potential.
