Muhammad Ali (Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr.) was born on January 17th, 1942. Muhammad passed away June 3rd, 2016 at 74 years old. Muhammad Ali was born in Louisivilla, Kentucky, USA.
Muhammad Ali was a man best known as one of the best professional boxers in American history who also made his name as a social activist.
He was the holder of the heavyweight title from 1964 to 1970 and between 1978 and 1979, he was the
Ring and
World Boxing Association (WBA) heavyweight champion
Due to his exploits, he was regarded as one of the most significant sports figures of the era and in many quarters, he is regarded as the greatest heavyweight boxer of all time.
Over his decades-long career, he fought in many historic matches that were highly publicized. Some of these included the
Fight of the Century with Joe Frazier, the
Thrilla in Manilla, and
The Rumble in the Jungle against George Foreman.
At a time when most boxers did not talk much preferring to let their managers do it for them, Ali developed a reputation for his outlandish abnd provocative persona as he often trash-talked his opponents and freestyle rhyme schemes during his interviews.
Outside the ring, Ali got into a lot of trouble in 1967 when he publicly declared he would not be forced to join the military. His refusal was because he was opposed to war on ethical grounds and his faith as a Muslim. For this, he was charged in court and lost his titles.
Muhammad Ali’s actions made him a cultural icon at a time when the counterculture generation of the 1960s was in full swing. As such, he was a very high-profile figure among the African American community throughout his career and at the height of the
Civil Rights Movement.
In 1975, Muhammad Ali published
The Greatest: My Own Story, chronicling his life in and out of the ring.
Spending much of his childhood and youth in the South which was full of discrimination and racial bigotry, he had to fight for his life and also for rewards and respect. But despite the many challenges, he redefined what it meant to be a beacon of hope to millions of the underprivileged as he inspired them to fight for their dreams and what they believed in.
After nearly three decades, Muhammad Ali followed up his memoir with the work
The Soul of a Butterfly.
In this work, he describes the values that have sustained and shaped his entire life. He takes his readers on a candid journey beginning in his early childhood to the present day, even as he shares his ethics and beliefs.
He introspects on his faith and the strength it provided him during his greatest challenges. He shows how studying Islam made him stronger in accepting the challenges in life and made him aware of the true purpose of his life.
