Montagu Don
Montagu Don was born on July 8th, 1955 and is currently 70 years old. Montagu Don was born in Iserlohn, Germany. Don attended Magdalene College, Cambridge.
Montagu Don is an English horticulturist, writer, and broadcaster who's best known as the lead presenter of
Gardener's World, a BBC TV series.
He was born in Germany and grew up in England. He studied at Magdalene College, Cambridge, where he met his future wife (Sarah Erskine, a trained architect and jeweller). Until the stock market crashed in 1987, they ran a successful costume jewellery business, which went bankrupt.
The business was a success after 5 years, operating out of a shop on Beauchamp Place in Knightsbridge with hundreds of outworkers and had secured as many as 60 outlets across the UK. It prompted Montagu to embark on a writing and broadcasting career.
Montagu was asked to leave school when he was 7 years old for being too boisterous.
Don failed his A-levels while attending a state sixth form college, and while he was studying for retakes at night school, he worked on a pig farm and a building site during the day. During his childhood, he'd become an avid farmer and gardener.
In 1989, he made his TV debut as a regular on
This Morning, with his gardening segment, which led to subsequent TV work across the decade, including his own shows for Channel 4 and BBC Television.
Don also began his writing career during this time and published the first of more than 25 books in 1990. Between 1994 and 2006, he wrote a weekly gardening column for The Observer.
In 2003, he replaced Alan Titchmarsh, upon his suggestion, as lead presenter of
Gardener's World, only departing the show between 2008 and 2011 because of illness. Since then, he's produced and written several garden series of his own.
The Complete Gardener: A Practical, Imaginative Guide to Every Aspect of Gardening brings you up to date on how Monty gardens, and his recommendations for you. Even great gardeners like Monty are constantly learning and always experimenting.
The most practical, comprehensive, and highly illustrated book Monty's ever written, it covers what he believes are the most important aspects of gardening. Organic techniques have always been at the core of his practice; however, this new edition picks up on yet another key principle: the need to provide habitats in your garden for local wildlife.
Over half of the pictures in this edition will be taken over a year in his Long Meadow garden, and he's going over the text with a fine-tooth comb in order to ensure that everything he says reflects his latest approach.
