Mike Glover is the founder and the CEO of Fieldcraft Survival and author of the Prepared book which shares stories of his most dire experiences in the US Army, Special Forces, and as a government contractor for the CIA. He spent two decades in the force and trained thousands of men and women in the art and science of survival.

Glover’s book Prepared is part mindset and part practical advice. The idea of being prepared for the worst day of your life is something that we all should learn and understand. Doomsday preppers are not showcased in the best light but the author does a wonderful job of working through that stereotype and explaining his perspective. The end goal isn’t to hoard resources in a bunker but instead thrive and lead a more self-sufficient lifestyle through thoughtful and deliberate actions.

The end goal is to establish a community that is able handle emergencies and hard times. To expand our capabilities to survive and thrive through training and practice.

Prepared is laid out in seven chapters. In the first chapter, Glover covers mindset, the most philosophical part of the book. He balances big, bad and scary things by blending in the importance of being ready for smaller and more common threats like weather emergencies or car accidents.

The second chapter explores planning. He uses a technique known as PACE (Primary, Alternate, Contingency, and Emergency) to explain the different types of plans that can be implemented in different scenarios. A good example is a fire escape plan. The primary plan would be to exit through the front door while the alternate would be the back door. The contingency plan would be to use the window while the emergency plan would be to use any means necessary. Glover walks us through different PACE examples for the rest of the book. The key point here is in how you react if the standard way of doing things isn’t possible.

Chapter three explores things like situational awareness through which he recommends we spend at least one day per week practicing situational awareness. Chapter four talks about decisions.

Chapters 5, 6, and 7 are similar in nature and complement each other from personal to community. Five explores what should be included in your Everyday Carry (EDC) kit while six explores mobility and how to prepare in an emergency. Chapter seven explores the homestead. The end goal is to have sufficient equipment for security and survival to expand your capabilities and gain an advantage when things go wrong. Glover explores survival needs in order of urgency. So, your equipment and plans need to be prepared and staged in such a way that it allows you to address immediate needs with speed.
