Mike Douglas
Mike Douglas (Michael Delaney Dowd Jr.) was born on August 11th, 1920. Mike passed away August 11th, 2006 at 85 years old. Mike Douglas was born in Chicago, IL, USA.
Mike Douglas was a big band singer, actor, entertainer, and TV talk show host of
The Mike Douglas Show.
By his teens, he was working as a nightclub singer and on a Lake Michigan dinner cruise ship. He worked as “staff singer” at WKY, the Oklahoma City radio station. Mike also provided Prince Charming’s singing voice in the Disney movie
Cinderella.
In 1953, he hosted
Showcase, a weekly program on WGN-TV in Chicago, and sang on
The Music Show on the DuMont Television Network.
During the 50s, he attempted to keep his singing career going working as a house singer for a nightclub and traveling to perform. During the middle part of the decade, doo wop and rock and roll took over the charts, leaving numerous older performers in the dustbin. During the leanest years, Mike and his wife survived by successfully flipping their LA homes.
He next appeared in Cleveland in 1961, where a onetime Chicago colleague hired him for $400 per week as an afternoon TV talk-show host at KYW-TV.
The Mike Douglas Show quickly grew in popularity, and it ultimately led to national syndication by August of 1963 on other stations that KYW-TV’s parent company (Westinghouse Broadcasting) owned.
It was broadcast live on KYW-TV in its city of origin, however this practice ended in 1965 when Zsa Zsa Gabor called Morey Amsterdam a son of a bitch.
Mike Douglas: My Story is the star’s personal no-holds-barred tale about why, how, where, and when it all happened.
He went from crooning to his present eminence holding to a “Mr. Nice Guy” image which rejected violence and hyper-sexuality that most producers decreed essential for TV success. “What a moment!” is how Mike sums up incredibly special events which happened on his daily variety-talk show. A moment might be his working with Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire as co-hosts for one week of shows from Hollywood that featured a who’s who of stars from MGM’s golden age. Or bringing Michel Legrand and Ray Charles to perform together for the first time, or singing a number with the legendary Pearl Bailey and Louis Armstrong.
Then there were these moments that felt like eternities to Mike. He finds himself being exposed to wrestling bears, rampaging bulls, berserk chimps, trained dolphins, untrained elephants, and racing ostriches. These moments range from poignant to pleasant, from slapstick to serious, from riotous to revealing, are relived for the reader from his 4,000 shows. They’re just one factor in what led to continuous recognition for
The Mike Douglas Show.
