Mel Bartholomew (Melvin Earl Bartholomew) was born on December 14th, 1931. Mel passed away April 28th, 2016 at 84 years old. Mel Bartholomew was born in Kingston, New York, USA. Bartholomew attended the Georgia Institute of Technology where he received a B.A. degree in civil engineering.

Mel Bartholomew was an American engineer, gardener, businessman, inventor, TV presenter, and author. He is best remembered for creating the Square Foot Gardening method. After graduating from the Georgia Institute of Technology with a degree in civil engineering in 1953, Bartholomew joined the military and served as a first lieutenant stationed in Maryland, Texas, and Germany.

After his service in the military, he started an engineering construction company in Maplewood, New Jersey. In 1982, he launched the PBS show Square Foot Gardening, which kicked off after doing a one-minute gardening spot on a local news channel. The show aired nationally for six years and brought widespread attention to his gardening method. He traveled across the country teaching people how to create square foot gardens. His method became popular, and at one point, he received 1,000 fan letters in a single day. His gardening technique was adopted by Louisiana as the official gardening technique taught in its schools.

In 1981, Mel Bartholomew published his debut book, Square Foot Gardening. The book turned out to be one of the most successful gardening books in American history, selling nearly a million copies. By 1996, the book was still one of the top 10 bestselling gardening books in the United States.
