Masih Alinejad
Masih Alinejad (Masoumeh Alinejad-Ghomikolayi) was born on September 11th, 1976 and is currently 48 years old. Masih Alinejad was born in Qomi Kola, Babol, Iran. Alinejad attended Oxford Brookes University where she received a Communications Studies degree.
Masih Alinejad is primarily known as an Iranian American activist and journalist who has been at the forefront of campaigning for women’s freedoms and rights in Iran. She is also the author of
The Wind in My Hair, the bestselling memoir she published in 2018.
Alinejad became known for her work reporting on the Iranian parliament in Tehran. She often got into trouble for her scathing attacks on the malfeasance and corruption among the legislators. Following the disputed presidential elections in 2009 and the subsequent protests, she had to leave Iran.
Masih founded the
White Wednesday/My Stealthy Freedom Campaign in 2014. The campaign's major aim was to fight against compulsory hijab, in what would become dubbed the largest act of civil disobedience since the founding of the
Islamic Republic of Iran.
Given her popularity, Masih Alinejad is huge on social media where she boasts more than eight million followers across her accounts. At some point, she was described as The woman whose hair frightens Iran by the
New York Times.
Masih continues to campaign against the Islamic Republic's abuse of human rights from her base in the United States and Europe. She now makes use of a satirical weekly show named
The Tablet, which she hosts to campaign against the Islamic Republic’s apartheid against women.
In 2018, Masih Alinejad published her memoir
The Wind in My Hair.
The work follows her story as a human rights activist and Iranian journalist from her very early days living as a kid in a poor village in the north of Iran to her career in Tehran as a journalist, to her rise as an activist for human rights based in New York and London.
Without much of an education, Masih had talked her way into becoming a journalist and reporter even though she did not even qualify for a press pass. She would then begin to cover the Iranian parliament and the theocratic elite that had all the control over it.
When she lost her press pass when she exposed rampant corruption, she continued writing columns before she had to escape and move to the United States and Europe from where she continued to fight the Islamic regime.
