Marv Albert
Marv Albert (Marvin Philip Aufrichtig) was born on June 12th, 1941 and is currently 84 years old. Marv Albert was born in New York City, New York, USA. Albert attended Syracuse University's Newhouse School of Public Communications and New York University.
Marv Albert was a sportscaster. He was commonly referred to as being “the voice of basketball”, having been honored by the Basketball Hall of Fame for his work. He was best known nationally for his work as lead announcer for both NBA games on TNT and for
NBA on NBC. He was inducted into the broadcasting Hall of Fame in 2015.
He has been play-by-play of 9 NBA Finals, 8 Super Bowls, and 7 Stanley Cup Finals. He has also called the Wimbledon Tennis Championships for TNT (with Mary Carillo and Jim Courier) and has worked as a reporter and co-host for 2 World Series (‘86 and ‘88).
After getting started as a ball boy for the New York Knicks, he worked his first Knicks game as a broadcaster on WCBS Radio on January 27, 1963. He was filling in for Marty Glickman, his mentor, who was away in Europe. The game was at the Boston Garden against the Celtics.
In 1962, he served as the voice of the AAA Syracuse Chiefs, while attending Syracuse University’s Newhouse School of Public Communications.
Starting in 1967 and lasting for 37 years, he served as the voice of the Knicks on both TV and radio before he was let go by James L. Dolan, the chairman of Cablevision and the MSG Network, after Albert criticized the team’s terrible play on air in 2004. His high salary was also cited as a reason.
In 2005, he became the lead play-by-play man for the Nets by calling their games on the YES Network, often teaming up with Mark Jackson. With this, the Nets had employed all three of the Albert brothers during their history. Al began his broadcast career with the Nets back during their ABA days, and Steve called Nets games during the late 70s and 80s.
He was demoted to secondary play-by-play during the Nets’ struggles in the 2009-10 season. He left the YES Network the following year in order to join CBS Sports for NCAA tournament and NFL coverage.
In May of 2021, he stated he planned on retiring after that year’s NBA playoffs. His final game called was Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals, a game between the Atlanta Hawks and Milwaukee Bucks.
I’d Love To but I Have a Game features a hilarious foreword from David Letterman. It is a look at the popular sports announcer’s almost 30 seasons of broadcasting which includes chapter introductions by Bob Costas, Jerry Seinfeld, Robert Klein, and Senator Bill Bradley.
