Her story, called
The Story of the Trapp Family Singers which was published in 1949 and made into a 1956 West German film called
The Trapp Family, which was made into a 1959 Broadway musical and a 1965 film.
After her parents died, she wound up staying with an uncle that mistreated Maria and punished her for things she didn’t do. It changed Maria from a shy kid into the teen “class cut-up”, figuring she might as well have some fun if she was going to get into trouble either way. She still got good grades, despite this change.
She graduated from high school at the age of 15, and ran away to stay with a friend, with the intent of becoming a tutor for kids staying at local hotels. Since she looked so young, nobody took her all that seriously. Finally, a hotel manager asked her to be an umpire for this tennis tournament. Even though she did not even know what an umpire was and never played tennis, she took the job.
Maria was able to earn enough money so that she could enter the State Teachers College for Progressive Education in Vienna, where she also got a scholarship. Maria graduated in 1923 when she was 18 years old.
She entered Nonnberg Abbey (a Benedictine monastery in Salzburg) as a postulant intent on becoming a nun.
In 1926, during her time teaching at the Abbey, she was asked to teach Maria Franziska von Trapp, one of the 7 kids born to Georg von Trapp, a widowed naval commander. Agathe Whitehead, his first wife and an Anglo-Austrian heiress, had died from scarlet fever in 1922. Maria started to look after the other kids: Martina, Rupert, Agathe, Hedwig, Werner, and Johanna as well.
Captain von Trapp saw just how much she cared about his kids and asked her to marry him despite being 25 years older than she was. She was frightened and fled back to Nonnberg Abbey in order to seek guidance from Virginia Lutz, the mother abbess, who advised that it was God’s will for her to marry him. So she accepted. They had three kids of their own together.
