I’ve always thought that Allingham was superior to Sayers and Christie. But I wasn’t sure why until I reread ‘Police At The Funeral.’ And then it hit me. Yes, her prose is superior to Agatha’s.

But more than that, she is not as obsessed with puzzles as her peers. Allingham’s books have solid mysteries. That can’t be denied. But she places far more emphasis on the lives and motives of her suspects. Her detective wants to understand why people do the things they do, how they took the turns that led to murder.

This approach fascinates me because writers from the Golden Age of Mystery did not tell character-centric stories.
