Manal Al-Sharif

Manal Al-Sharif was born on April 25th, 1979 and is currently 46 years old. Manal Al-Sharif was born in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. Al-Sharif attended King Abdulaziz University where she received a Bachelor of Science in computing and a Cisco Career Certification.

Manal al-Sharif is a Saudi women’s rights activist that helped begin a right-to-drive campaign in 2011. She was filmed driving a car as part of this campaign. The video was posted on Facebook and YouTube.

She was detained, released, and then rearrested the next day. A few days later, she was released on bail, with the conditions that she return for questioning if necessary, not driving, and not talking to the media.

Until May of 2012, she worked for Saudi Aramco, the Saudi national oil company, as Information Security Consultant. She also wrote for the Saudi daily, Alhayat.

After her driving campaign, she remained an active critic of the Saudi government, tweeting on issues that include imprisoned female foreign workers, the lack of elections of the Shura Council, and the murder of Lama al-Ghandi.

Al-Sharif’s work has been recognized by Time, Foreign Policy, and the Oslo Freedom Forum.

She was listed in Forbes list of Women Who Briefly Rocked in 2011 and Foreign Policy magazine named her one of the Top 100 Global Thinkers of the year. She was named one of the Fearless Women of the Year by The Daily Beast, and Time magazine named her one of the 100 Most Influential People of the year.

Daring to Drive: A Saudi Woman’s Awakening is a ferociously intimate memoir by one devout woman from a modest family from Saudi Arabia. She became the unexpected leader of this brave movement to support women’s right to drive.

Manal was the second daughter of a cab driver, born the same year that fundamentalism took its hold. During her adolescence she was a religious radical, melting her brother’s boy band tapes since music was forbidden by Islamic law. However what a major difference an education can make.

By the time she made it to her 20s, she was a computer security engineer, one of just a few women working in this desert compound which resembled suburban America. That is when the Saudi kingdom’s contradictions became too much to bear: She was labeled slut for talking with her male colleagues, her teen brother chaperoned her on a business trip, and as she kept a car in her garage, she was forbidden from driving down the city streets while behind the wheel.

This is the fiercely intimate memoir of this accidental activist, a powerfully vivid tale about a young Muslim woman that stood up to this kingdom of men, and was able to win. She offers a rare glimpse into the lives of women in Saudi Arabia today.
