Secret Agents looks at today’s emerging, new infections; those that have increased in attack rate or geographic range, or threaten to do so, and tells the stories of the scientists that race to catch up with these invisible adversaries, superior both in guile and in speed. Every chapter focuses on a different threat: animals and insect-borne diseases, antibiotic resistance, foodborne pathogens, pandemic influenza, infectious causes of chronic disease, and bioterrorism, which includes the latest info on public health threats posed by anthrax as well as diseases like smallpox.

Based in part on material collected from the Forum on Emerging Infections hosted by the Institute of Medicine in Washington, D.C., this book is ultimately just as engaging as it is disturbing. Madeline’s thorough survey of the field of infectious disease, supplemented by extensive interviews with the top researchers of today, yields a compelling portrait of a world that’s engaged in a clandestine war.

Emerging infections are among the many secret ties that bind the world into this organic whole. We know that infectious disease is an inescapable part of life; however, we need to start thinking globally and acting locally if we’re to avoid the menace of a catastrophic outbreak of some new plague. This book sounds like a compelling and clear call to take up arms against the organic predators among us.
