Louise Brooks
Louise Brooks (Mary Louise Brooks) was born on November 14th, 1906. Louise passed away August 8th, 1985 at 78 years old. Louise Brooks was born in Cherryvale, Kansas, USA.
Louise Brooks was an American film actress back during the late 1920s and 1930s. She is now regarded as being an icon of the flapper culture, due in large part because of the bob hairstyle which she helped popularize during the prime of her career.
When she was 15 years old, she started her career as a dancer and went on tour with the Denishawn School of Dancing and Related Arts where she danced opposite Ted Shawn. After she was fired, she found work as a chorus girl in George White’s
Scandals and as a semi-nude dancer in
Ziegfeld Follies in New York City.
As she was dancing in the
Follies, Louise came to the attention of a producer at Paramount Pictures, named Walter Wanger, and signed a 5 year deal with the studio. Louise made her screen debut in
The Streets of Forgotten Men, in an uncredited role. She appeared in supporting roles in various Paramount movies until taking on the role of the heroine in
Beggars of Life.
It was during this time that she became an intimate friend of Marion Davies and joined the elite social circle of William Randolph Hearst (a press baron) at Hearst Castle, located San Simeon.
She gained a cult following in Europe for her crucial vamp role in
A Girl in Every Port, the Howard Hawks silent buddy film.
Her distinctive bob cut helped kick off a new trend, and so many women styled their hair in imitation of both Louise and Colleen Moore, a fellow film star.
Louise, having grown dissatisfied with her mediocre roles that she was getting in Hollywood films, went to Germany in 1929 and starred in 3 feature films which launched her to international stardom:
Miss Europe,
Pandora’s Box, and
Diary of a Lost Girl. By 1938, she had starred in 17 silent films and 8 sound films.
When she retired from acting, she fell upon some financial hardship and started working as a paid escort. For the following 2 decades, she struggled with suicidal tendencies and alcoholism.
After her films were rediscovered by cinephiles during the 1950s, a reclusive Louise would start writing articles about her movie career; and they drew considerable acclaim.
Lulu in Hollywood is the collected writings of an icon of the silent film era.
Louise is one of the most famous actresses of the whole silent era, renowned just as much for her rebellion against the Hollywood system as she was for her performances in such influential flicks as
Diary of a Lost Girl and
Pandora’s Box.
8 autobiographical essays all written by Louise, on such topics that range from her early days as a Denishawn and
Ziegfeld Follies dancer to her childhood in Kansas to her friendships with W. C. Fields, Charles Chaplin, Martha Graham, Humphrey Bogart, as well as others are all collected here.
