In 1975, he began working as a special agent with the FBI in New York City, focusing on organized crime. His early assignments were on dangerous groups and crime families that were a massive threat to public safety.
Louis Freeh would then join the Southern District of New York’s U.S. Attorney’s Office, where he helped prosecute terrorists and organized crime figures. He provided military legal service when he worked at the U.S. Army Reserve Judge Advocate General Corps as captain.
By 1991, he had risen through the ranks to become a federal judge who handled both civil and criminal cases. In 1993, he was made the Director of the FBI during a time of great national concern and intense pressure.
As Director, he dealt with the fallout of the siege of Waco, the standoff with the Montana Freemen, which he successfully brought to a peaceful end. Louis Freeh was also in charge when the Unabomber was captured, ending a frightening and long bombing campaign.
During his time leading the FBI, he was heavily focused on dealing with the rise in international terrorism. Nonetheless, the threat grew even larger following his retirement from his post in 2001.
After his retirement, he went into private practice and worked in consulting, legal, and corporate leadership. Freeh was also the founder of an international risk management firm that conducted several high-profile investigations.

My FBI.
