Lord Byron

Lord Byron (George Gordon Byron) was born on January 22nd, 1788. Lord passed away April 19th, 1824 at 36 years old. Lord Byron was born in London, England. Byron attended Trinity College, Cambridge.

Lord Byron was an English peer and poet. For his work, he is deemed one of the greatest poets from Britain and one of the major figures in the Romantic movement.

He grew up in Scotland and when he was just ten, he inherited his father's title to become a Baron. As a child, he was very unhappy and isolated himself despite being the heir of a rundown but idyllic estate. When he realized that he was bisexual in his teens, he became even more secretive and withdrawn.

By the time he turned 20, Lord Byron was deeply in debt and he left England as he went to travel the Mediterranean. He traveled with a friend to Turkey, Albania, Spain, Portugal and Greece. Since he loved the Greek climate and culture, he stayed there for a while while his friend went back to England.

In 1811, Lord Byron moved back to England where he found fame and notoriety among the intellectual aristocratic class following the release of his poem Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage. When the first two parts of the poem were published they sold out in three days.

As one of the most outspoken members of the House of Lords, Byron took advantage of his popularity to champion social reform and speak for worker’s rights.

In his personal life, he married and soon divorced Anne Isabella Milbanke who accused him of sodomy, and incest. Byron also had an affair with the sister-in-law of Percy Bysshe Shelley the poet gaining much notoriety. By 1816, he was so afraid for his life that he left England and went to live in Italy.

It was while he was in college that Lord Byron published his first poetry volume Fugitive Pieces which contained a collection of poems some of which he penned when he was just fourteen. He would later revise the collection that he would then publish as Hours of Idleness.

In 1824 Lord Byron published Don Juan, a satirical poem that provides a very different view of Don Juan the Spanish folk legend. In this work, Byron portrays the man as a victim who was seduced by women rather than being a rabid humanizer as is usually portrayed. From Spain to Turkey to Russia and England, he writes a story of the pain and adventures of Don Juan across Europe.
