Liza Campbell is best known as a Scottish columnist, calligrapher, artist, and author. She is the second daughter of the 6th Earl of Cawdor Hugh Campbell of Cawdor Castle. It is the castle that was previously believed to have been wrongly associated with Shakespeare’s
Macbeth.
Working as an artist, Campbell was employed at an art gallery and her engraved soapstone works have been exhibited at the
Sladmore Gallery,
Babington House, and the
All Saints Gallery. Some of her collages have been shown at the
Rebecca Hossack Art Gallery and the
Michael Naimski Gallery. She has also been a columnist for the magazine
Adventures of a Past It Girl.
As for her personal life, Liza Campbell dated Imran Khan, the man who would later become the prime minister of Pakistan. In 1990, she married big game fisherman William Riber Charles Athill and for two years, they lived together on a deserted island.
In 2013, she was reported to have claimed that the laws and customs of only allowing male children to inherit property were a legacy of sexism. Campbell also asserts that while she loved Colin Campbell her brother, she believed his inheritance of the family estate and father’s titles to be peculiar.
In 2006, Liza Campbell published her memoir,
A Charmed Life, in which she tells her childhood story of living in Wales in the 60s to when her father inherited Cawdor Castle and took his family with him to Scotland.
It was in their ancestral home in Scotland that things began to unravel. Having to take up taxing responsibilities, her father began to drink heavily, do drugs, and have extramarital affairs which made him almost go mad. Over the years, the ancestral home turned into the setting for horrific domestic violence and reckless extravagance thus destroying a legacy that was more than six centuries old.
