Linda Castillo is one of the outstanding mystery writers up to date. Kate Burkholder series is my favorite series where Burkholder is a police chief holding a huge secret that comes back to haunt her. An Amish Murder movie based on the debut novel is enjoyable, even though I found the book more fascinating. The book has descriptions of the quiet and tranquil life in the rural county with an implication of the violence that comes without warning. I also found the High Country Heroes series interesting, and in the debut novel, we meet John Maitland, who does a saving lives job; he has learned the cost of personal involvement. I liked how he ignored his emotions due to past experiences to rescue Hannah.
If you’re tired of seemingly invincible detectives that solve mysteries and apprehend killers without breaking a sweat, you will love Kate Burkholder. She reminds me of Lara Croft from the Tomb Raider reboot because she goes through so much in each book.
I just finished book 3, and I don’t see how Kate can make it through the next dozen or so novels. She can’t keep this up, can she? But that is why I continue to read this series.
Kate has to overcome incredible odds to get justice for the victims of violent crimes. I have seen a multitude of male protagonists with these attributes. Kate feels like a breath of fresh air because she can’t just bulldoze her way through the threats she encounters. She has to think on her feet, which is why her adventures are so thrilling.
When I suggest the Kate Burkholder series to my friends, I can tell they are tuning me out, perhaps thinking I’m talking about a cozy Amish mystery character. But this is certainly not the case. The Linda Castillo mysteries are anything but cozy.
I enjoy the characters, but even more I like the settings, the challenging mysteries, and learning more about the Amish people, their communities, customs and beliefs. I live in a rural area where more and more Amish are settling, but mostly what we know is through observation and not necessarily interaction.
Castillo does not go light on the descriptions of the gripping murders and she leads us to resolutions I often had not anticipated. I would definitely recommend that you give this author a try
This is the first book of hers I’ve read. I was looking for something along the lines of J D Robb as I’ve finished that series. I enjoyed this book very much it was a little more intense with a lot less romance, but I will definitely read the next book in this series.
Once you open a Kate Burkholder book, it’s hard to put it down. A friend told me about this series two years ago. In less than three months I had read every book written. Now, I impatiently wait for the next installment.
