Given that she has over the years struggled with relationships, addiction, and fame, she has never been able to release more than two albums per decade. Nonetheless, she remains one of the savviest and most courageous lyricists in the United Kingdom.
Outside of singing and songwriting, Allen has also acted in movies and on stage. In 2021, she was cast in the play
2:22 A Ghost Story where she played the lead role of Jenny. She was also a character in
Elizabeth, the 1998 film that her mother produced.

My Thoughts Exactly, her memoir, in 2018. In this work, Allen writes about how she grew up in a dysfunctional family with parents who were never there. She then tells of getting the big break, how she handled her mental health issues and co-dependence, and her substance and alcohol abuse. Allen also chronicles how she became a mother and wife and how she navigated the misogyny in the music industry.
