Leontyne Price
Leontyne Price (Mary Violet Leontyne Price) was born on February 10th, 1927 and is currently 98 years old. Leontyne Price was born in Laurel, Mississippi, USA. Price attended Central State University where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree. She also attended Juilliard School.
Leontyne Price is a spinto soprano that was the first African American soprano to get international acclaim.
She started her longtime association with the Metropolitan Opera. Leontyne would regularly appear at the world’s major opera houses, which include the San Francisco Opera, Royal Opera House, Lyric Opera of Chicago, and La Scala. While at La Scala, she was also the very first African American to ever sing a leading role. She was especially renowned for her performances of the title role of Verdi’s
Aida.
She attended Juilliard School (where she graduated cum laude), and it was also where she had her operatic debut as Mistress Ford in
Verdi’s Falstaff.
Virgil Thomson, having heard her performance, engaged her in Four Saints in Three Acts, before she embarked on her debut tour, she also starred (with William Warfield, her husband) in this successful revival of Gershwin’s
Porgy and Bess. There were numerous performances that followed, including this recital she did at the Library of Congress with Samuel Barber (a composer) at the piano.
Leontyne’s televised performance of Puccini’s
Tosca, along with appearances at the San Francisco Opera as Pouleric’s
Dialogues des Carmelites and
Aida, brought her to major international attention. She’d go on to sing at numerous major opera houses with Aida around the world, before her successful debut at the Metropolitan Opera in 1961, as Leonora in Verdi’s
Il trovatore.
Heavenly Aida. Long ago, in the faraway land of Ethiopia, there lived this Royal Princess who was gentle as the moonlight and just as beautiful as the morning star. Her name was Aida, and more than anything on planet earth, she loved her dad and her country.
Here, in one of the great love stories of all time, the proud Princess Aida, gets captured by Egyptian soldiers and is forced into being a slave by her country’s greatest of enemies. When Aida falls in love with the Egyptian army’s leader, this horrible emotional struggle starts. Should she forsake the loyalty she feels to her dad and country for her true love: a warrior destined to destroy both of them?
Only Leontyne, known around the world for her definitive portrayal of Verdi’s
Aida, can tell such a powerful tale from the Princess’ intimate point of view. Caldecott Medallists Diane and Leo Dillion have created some vibrant paintings with marbleized patterns which give both characters and the events this dramatic immediacy. This is an unforgettable book of honor, bravery, and passion.
