While working in Jackson Hole at a bank, Kyle decided to attempt something creative. According to his website, he was inspired by the people around him in Wyoming that he met. From a participant in the Olympics, to someone who had climbed Mount Everest. His wife was the one that gave the novel writing suggestion, and Rising Phoenix was completed 8 months later.
Kyle started writing the Mitch Rapp series following the unfortunate passing of Vince Flynn. The first book he wrote was The Survivor, the 14th book in the series. He wrote write a total 9 books in the series, before passing the baton on to Don Bentley.
At the website The Real Book Spy, Enemy of the State was listed as one of the Best Political Thrillers of 2017 and Red War in 2018. In 2019 Lethal Agent was named one of the Best Action Thrillers. In 2021 they would name Enemy at the Gates one of the Best Thrillers of the year. In 2022 Oath of Loyalty was named the Best Thriller of the year.
In an odd coincidence, Mitch Rapp and Kyle Mills are connected via Pan Am 103. The reason Mitch Rapp joined the CIA in the novels is due to the terrorist attack which occurred on the flight Pan Am 103, where his girlfriend passed. Kyle Mills dad was an FBI agent and the lead on the investigation of Pan Am 103.
Kyle states on his website that he attempts to travel where he can for research on locations for his upcoming novels. He has visited the likes of Istanbul and Cape Town for research.
In a neat trivia note, and what Kyle referred to as very rewarding in an interview with The Joyous Living, three pages in The Survivor were written by Vince Flynn. He asked readers to see if they could pick out those three pages but no-one ever did, which meant that he had did his job.
