Kofi Annan
Kofi Annan (Kofi Atta Annan) was born on April 8th, 1938. Kofi passed away August 18th, 2018 at 80 years old. Kofi Annan was born in Kumasi, Colony of the Gold Coast (Ghana). Annan attended Macalester College where he received a B.A. in economics, the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies where he received a diplôme d'études approfondies DEA degree and MIT Sloan School of Management where he received a master's degree in management. He also attended the Kumasi College of Science and Technology.
Kofi Annan was the seventh United Nations Secretary-General who made history as the first from UN staff. He began serving his first term in 1997 and retired in 2006 after finishing two terms. He won a
Nobel Peace Prize alongside the United Nations during his tenure.
As the Secretary-General, he was all about comprehensive reforms at the United Nations in different areas such as international security and peace, human dignity and tolerance, and equality among other things. He was also involved in mobilization for the fight against terrorism and HIV/AIDS.
Following his studies in Ghana and the United States, he got a job at the
World Health Organization. He would later serve at the
United Nations High Commission for Refugees before he was posted to the New York UN Headquarters where he worked on peacekeeping, finance and budget, and human resources management.
As Undersecretary-General, he worked on the repatriation of citizens and staff of Western countries from Iraq after the invasion of Kuwait. As Secretary General, he worked on a range of delicate political situations such as encouraging negotiations between Palestinians and Israelis in the 200os, forging a response to East Timor violence, and attempting to make Iran comply with resolutions of the Security Council
Annan also worked on the HIV/AIDS epidemic which he referred to as his personal priority. In this regard, he proposed a
Global Health and AIDS Fund which garnered more than $1.5 billion in contributions and pledges. He also galvanized the Security Council and General Assembly to combat Global terrorism following the September 11 attacks.
The Secretary General was married to Swedish painter and lawyer Nane Annan who was very interested in the workings of the United Nations. Together they had three children. Annan died in 2018 aged 80.
