Kirsten Berg
Kristen Berg is an editor, research reporter, and journalist. She formerly worked at Future Tense, a partnership between New America, Slate, and Arizona State University, which is where she served as editor of
Future Tense Fiction: Stories of Tomorrow.
The anthology
Future Tense Fiction featured several big-name authors, including Emily St. John Mandel, Carmen Maria Machado, Nnedi Okorafor, Charlie Jane Anders, and Annalee Newitz. The focus of the anthology was on how emerging technologies will change the way we live, both in reality and in fiction. It featured not only big names but a diverse collection of authors who specialize in speculative literature and science fiction.
Berg later went to work for ProPublica, a non-profit investigative news organization, as a researcher. In collaboration with other colleagues, she was part of a team nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for its reporting on the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. She would later be part of a team of researchers who won the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service based on their investigation into the ethics and oversight of the Supreme Court.
ProPublica has said that Berg's research is the backbone of many of its deep-dive investigations. One example of her research is that when ProPublica was investigating the COVID-19 pandemic, they were repeatedly ignored for interview requests. To combat this, Berg built a spreadsheet of over 700 current and former CDC employees, detailing the best ways to reach them as well as key aspects of their roles. This allowed them to reach out more effectively and pitch the idea of working together.
Other investigations that Berg has worked on include a look into Chinese organized crime's connection to America's illegal marijuana market.
In addition to working for ProPublica and Future Tense, Berg has also worked with New America, the New England Center for Investigative Reporting, the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, and PBS's Frontline.
