Gilmore Girls the TV series where she played the role of Emily Gilmore the matriarch. She was also cast in
Dirty Dancing the film where she played the role of the mother of Jennifer Grey, Marjorie Houseman.
After spending much of her childhood in Colorado Springs, she decided to move to New York at eighteen, since she wanted to study and pursue a career in ballet dancing. She would get her breakthrough when she was cast in
A Chorus Line, the iconic musical as Sheila Bryant. This role would go on to earn her a
Drama Desk Award in addition to a
Tony.
Kelly made her TV debut in the detective mystery series,
Hawaii Five-O which opened doors to other bigger projects that she worked on over the years. In 1988, she was cast in
The Thorns before she got a role in the 1995 movie
My Wildest Dreams. She has also acted in other series over the years including
Law & Order,
Murphy Brown, and
Kate & Allie.
Her biggest role was when she was cast as Emily Gilmore the New England matriarch on
Gilmore Girls which ran from 2000 to 2007. She would make a comeback on the
Gilmore Girls in the Netflix miniseries
Gilmore Girls: a Year in the Life in 2016 in addition to acting on
Bunheads between 2012 to 2013.
In 2024, Kelly Bishop published her memoir titled
The Third Gilmore Girl.
In this work, she reflects on her long and storied life and career, even as she looks toward the future. She puts forth some of the life lessons she learned on her journey of life. Bishop starts with when she was very young and transitioned from dancing to drama then to marrying a compulsive young gambler. She also chronicles the achievements and losses she had to experience which included losing her husband to cancer and marching for women’s rights.
