Karen Crouse published her debut novel,
Norwich, in 2018.
In the work, the author asks how Norwich in Vermont, small as it is, has over the years produced nearly a dozen exceptional Olympians since 1984. The feat is even more remarkable since the town does not adhere to the competitive and intense youth sports culture prevalent in other sporting towns.
According to Crouse, the success comes from a community ethos that is all about personal growth, effort, and enjoyment over winning. The children in the town are allowed to develop at their own pace, support their peers, and participate in multiple sports, thus developing well-roundedness and resilience.
Crouse asserts that the environment in Norwich contributes to the overall success and happiness of its youth in addition to enhancing their competitive spirit.
