Kali Nicole Gross published
Hannah Mary Tabbs and the Disembodied Torso in 2015, in which she tells the story of a brutal murder from 1887.
A headless body was found on the outskirts of Philadelphia, and the police finger George Wilsopn and Hannah Mary Tabbs as the lead suspects. He follows the trial and the attention it garnered, as it shows how topics such as family conflict, violence, and sex became headline news.
More than just a retelling of the crime, Kali explains the impact of racism on the case. She shows how Black suspects were treated unfairly, as they were often faced with prejudice. She also reveals the many problems of race and justice in America.
Nearly a decade later, Gross published
Vengeance Feminism as a historical work about women who went up against injustice and racism.
Kali presents examples of women who were let down by the legal system and were unable to obtain justice. Many of these resorted to sometimes violent, bold actions to protect their dignity and themselves. While they were not always perfect, they would not remain powerless or be silenced.
Gross believes that survival often requires people to make difficult choices and that justice is often complex.
