Judson Brewer

Judson Brewer (Judson Alyn Brewer) was born in 1974 and is currently 51 years old. Brewer attended Princeton University where he received a Bachelor's degree in chemistry and Washington University School of Medicine where he received an M.D. degree and Ph.D. degree. He also did post-doctoral studies at the Yale School of Medicine.

Judson Brewer is an American author, psychiatrist, and neuroscientist specializing in neural mechanisms of mindfulness through the use of conventional and real-time fMRI. He is the founder of Dr. Jud (formerly Mind Sciences), an application-based digital therapeutic treatment program for smoking, anxiety, and overreacting. Brewer is also an associate professor at Brown’s Warren Alpert Medical School and Brown School of Public Health and a research and innovation director at Brown University’s Mindfulness Center.

Brewer’s book Unwinding Anxiety is neither a science manual nor is it a self-book. It is a book that explores how our minds create “anxiety loops” and how to make use of a series of mindfulness and awareness tools to end the loop and refocus our brains to accept anxiety and move on.

This book follows Brewer’s previous book The Carving Mind in which he explores how people can reprogram their minds to break habits that cause addictions such as using smartphones and smoking. The author employs similar techniques such as personal stories and anecdotes from his lab, and simple-to-understand descriptions of the intricate brain mechanisms to explain how we can decrease anxiety-creating habits.

Even though the major part of this book emphasizes on mindfulness and awareness, there is nothing intricate about his methods and research. There’s no chanting, no religion, and no major commitment to his methodologies. Brewer is a skilled expert in how humans can make use of mindfulness to improve their mental health and the methods he shares require nothing more than your self-introspection, brain, and some motivation.

The Hunger Habit explores how emotions, cravings, stress, habit, anxiety, or boredom can result in feeling out of control around food. Even though anxiety at times feels like it's something that happens to us, the desire for food is something we should be able to handle. But it’s not that simple.

The effects of these constant struggles are a toxic concoction of self-judgment and shame that makes us feel like it's impossible to turn around our behavior.

This book is based on Brewer’s meticulous research plan designed to help us understand the workings of our brains to heal from the frustration and guilt we often feel eating. However, it’s important to note that this isn’t a diet book pretending to be one. Instead, the step-by-step guide focuses on reprograming our brains to tap into awareness to turn around our relationship with food. The program is designed to shift our awareness from fighting with ourselves and instead befriend our minds and bodies.

The key to turning things around is to learn how to reprogram our brain instead of fighting our impulses and also adopt a self-kindness attitude instead of judgment. Overall, The Hunger Habit is a book designed to help the reader break free from food jail and take control of their lives.
