Josh Gondelman

Josh Gondelman is an American author and standup comedian who was a writer for Last Week Tonight and supervising producer for Desus & Mero on Showtime.

His book Nice Try is a vivid exploration of the reasons why we should always try to do the right thing, even when our life doesn’t go as planned. It also explores stories about relationships, careers, struggles, and everyday mistakes that readers can all relate to. In addition, the book includes an essay that was first published in The New York Times, in which he imagines what would have happened if he had failed at his own wedding. The author also describes awkward road trips, strange experiences, and his story of adopting a dog from a stranger. He turns every situation into humour while maintaining an honest and encouraging tone.

A key theme evident throughout the book is being “nice.” Gondelman tells the reader that kindness is always important, but it’s not always easy. He explains how being a nice person can at times be misunderstood or taken for weakness, and at the same time shows us that staying kind is still worthwhile.

Most of the stories are truly memorable. He shares different versions of how he met his wife, a tribute to his grandmother and her love for the New England Patriots, and reflections on becoming a fan of new interests. The book also reflects on the friendly voice that helped him earn praise from prominent outlets such as the New York Observer.

What makes this book unique from your typical memoir-in-essays books is how Gondelman maintains an emotional balance throughout. The stories are lighthearted, carry genuine insight on relationships and choose optimism rather than cynicism, and that makes the book feel relatable to the readers.

Nice Try is a truly memorable memoir-in-essays and is a perfect recommendation for those who prefer truth over polish.
