Johnny Hart was an American cartoonist who published very popular comic strips for more than four decades.
He is best known as the co-creator of
The Wizard of Id and the creator of
B.C. alongside Brant Parker, the cartoonist. His memorable characters, clever humor, and simple drawing style made him one of the twentieth century’s most influential newspaper cartoonists.
Johnny Hart was initially an artist before he got into newspaper comics. In 1958, he created the comic strip
B.C., which used a prehistoric setting with ancient characters and cavemen to explore human nature, everyday life, family, friendships, and work.
In 1964, he worked with Brant Parker to create the comic strip
The Wizard of Id. While he wrote the stories and jokes, Parker was in charge of the illustrations. It was a playful look at daily life, leadership, and politics that was set in a medieval kingdom and was popular across the world.
For much of his career, Johnny Hart was known for his occasional reflections on morality and faith, visual humor, and sharp wordplay.
For his work as a comic artist, Johnny Hart was honored with several awards. One of his biggest awards was the Reuben Award for Outstanding Cartoonist by the National Cartoonists Society.
In 1959, Johnny Hart published the work
Hey! B.C., a comic strip in a prehistoric setting that follows dinosaurs, cavemen, and talking animals dealing with ordinary problems in an unexpected and funny way.
While it is set in the past, many of the jokes are about modern life, including family, friendship, inventions, sports, and work. The author uses gentle humor, simple drawings, and clever wordplay to explain how little has changed over the years concerning human nature.
The work introduces several of the best-known characters in the BC series who made it one of the most popular strips over the decades.
In
The King Is a Fink, Johnny Hart published a collection of comic strips in
The Wizard of Id series, which were illustrated by Brant Parker.
The work is set in a medieval kingdom as it follows a clever wizard, short-tempered king, and several unusual characters. The work makes fun of human behavior, everyday life, laws, soldiers, and leadership through playful dialogue and quick jokes.
Parker’s expressive artwork and the witty writing by Johnny Hart combine to create a lighthearted satirical work that proved popular among both adult and young readers.
In 2007, Johnny Hart published the collection
Growingold With B.C., which is a celebration of the five decades of the B.C. comic strip.
It is a selection of many of Johnny Hart’s favorite strips through the decades. It also includes his thoughts on rare concept drawings, comics, and stories about the many friends who inspired many of the characters in his comics.
More than a collection, it is a tribute to Johnny Hart’s lasting popularity and long career.
