John Keats

John Keats was born on October 31st, 1795. John passed away February 23rd, 1821 at 25 years old. John Keats was born in Moorgate, London, England.

John Keats was an English poet who wrote romantic poems alongside the likes of Percy Bysshe and Lord Byron. Some of his best-known works include Endymion his long-form poem to Ode to a Nightingale and Ode to a Grecian Urn.

In his earlier years, Keats was lucky enough to have parents who fostered his interest in history and classical studies. It was in school that he found a mentor in the headmaster’s son who introduced him to the works of George Chapman and Renaissance writers such as Spense and Torquato Tasso.

When Keats was just 14, he lost his mother to tuberculosis, and together with his siblings, they were sent to live with Jon Sandell and Richard Abbey their new guardians. That very year, he left home to go pursue an apprenticeship as a surgeon.

Keats wrote An Imitation of Spense his first poem when he was 19 years old in 1814. The following year, he began studying medicine even as he assisted in surgeries in the hospital. Given how taxing and time consuming his studies and internship were he never had much time for his creative endeavors. Nonetheless he never lost his ambition of one day becoming a poet.

In 1816, Keats qualified as an apothecary which meant he was now a professional surgeon, physician, and apothecary. Still, all he wanted was to write poetry, and soon after O Solitude the sonnet which was his first printed poem was published in The Examiner.

Selected Poems is a work that was published in 1947 that brings together some of the best poetry that John Keats ever published.

As a collection, it comes with some less well-known poems in addition to some very popular ones. This final volume comes with the unfinished Hyperion and and some of the great odes shows that Keats was maturing as a poet the more he wrote.
