John C. Bogle was a business magnate, investor, and philanthropist. He was the chief executive and founder of The Vanguard Group and has been credited with popularizing the index fund.
John was an avid money manager and investor, and preached investment over speculation, long term patience over short term action and reducing your broker fees as much you possibly can.
His academic record at Manasquan High School allowed him and his twin brother to transfer to Blair Academy on work scholarships. While at Blair, John showed a particular aptitude for math with computations and numbers fascinating him. He graduated from Blair cum laude and got accepted at Princeton University, studying investment and economics.
He sought a position in investments or banking after graduating from Princeton. He got hired by Morgan at the Wellington Fun, and was promoted to assistant manager in 1955, and he was able to analyze the company and its entire investment department. He persuaded Wellington to change its whole strategy of concentrating on just a single fund and create a new fund. He succeeded eventually, and the new fund became a turning point in John’s career.
After John climbed through the ranks, he replaced Morgan as the chairman of Wellington’s mutual funds in 1970, however got fired later on for a very unwise merger that he’d approved. This was a poor choice that he had later considered to be his largest career mistake.
As a result of creating The Vanguard Group,
Fortune magazine named him one of the four investment giants of the 20th century in 1999.
