Joel Madden

Joel Madden (Joel Rueben Combs) was born on March 11th, 1979 and is currently 47 years old. Joel Madden was born in Waldorf, Maryland, USA.

Joel Madden is best known for being the lead singer of Good Charlotte. He’s also part of The Madden Brothers, a pop rock collaboration with Benji Madden, his identical twin brother that plays guitar and sings backing vocals for Good Charlotte.

They have an older brother, named Josh, that also works in the music industry, and a little sister named Sarah. Joel went to La Plata High School in La Plata, Maryland.

At the age of 16 Joel, Benji, and a friend started their own band. It was short lived, and the Maddens eventually recruited fellow high schoolers Billy Martin, Paul Thomas, and Aaron Escolopio to form Good Charlotte. They took the name from a book called Good Charlotte: Girls of the Good Day Orphanage by Carol Beach York.

They worked on getting the band signed, reading magazines and books that would aid them in achieving their goal. They made promotional packages that they sent off to record labels.

Joel learned that the girl he took to homecoming was the sister of bass player Paul Thomas. Paul met the brothers and was impressed with their performance abilities, and started playing clubs in the DC metro area. The Maddens moved to Annapolis, Maryland, where they performed some acoustic shows.

Billy Martin attended one of these shows at the insistence of Jimi HaHa of Jimmie’s Chicken Shack. Billy befriended the Madden brothers and allowed them to move in with him after getting evicted out of their apartment. Billy joined Good Charlotte after they learned they had this shared interest in the band Silverchair and the break up of Billy’s band called Overflow. They wrote some new songs and performed some demos.

The group worked in support slots for Lit, Blink-182, and Bad Religion. Then Good Charlotte opened up for Save Ferris in Philadelphia. After the show, they left this demo behind of “Little Things” which quickly got airplay on local radio station Y100. Benji was certain of the song’s potential hit status with the reality of the lyrics and the high school theme.

An employee of Sony Music passed the demo to region promotion manager that was impressed by the group’s songwriting ability and the autobiographical nature of the music. He contacted a talent manager that watched the group and started working with them. Another station played the song, which soon became a hit, causing record labels to get interested in signing the band.

In 2000, Good Charlotte released their self-titled debut. Then in 2002, they released “The Young and the Hopeless”. It sold 3.5 million copies and features “Girls & Boys”, “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous”, and “The Anthem”. It was certified triple platinum for selling nearly 5 million copies sold around the world.
