Joe Eszterhas (József Antal Eszterhás) was born on November 23rd, 1944 and is currently 81 years old. Joe Eszterhas was born in Csákánydoroszló, Hungary. Eszterhas attended Ohio University.
Joe Eszterhas is a Hungarian-American writer.
He started his career with a stint at the Dayton Journal Herald, before he moved to The Plain Dealer located in Cleveland, where he was one of the first reporters that covered the Kent State Shootings in 1970. Joe and Michael Roberts (fellow Plain Dealer journalist) spent the following 3 months reporting on the story, and their work was published as Thirteen Seconds: Confrontation at Kent State. Joe would later join the Rolling Stone staff.
Afterward, he entered into the film industry. His first screenwriting credit was for the movie
F. I. S. T., a Sylvester Stallone movie. Joe also co wrote the script for
Flashdance, which became one of the highest grossing movies of 1983, and set off a lucrative and prolific run for his career. By the early 90s, he was known as being the highest paid writer in Hollywood, and noted for his work in the erotic thriller genre.
Joe was paid a then-record of $3 million for his script of Love Hurts, produced under the title of
Basic Instinct, and following its success, news outlets reported he’d earned seven figure payouts solely on the basis of two-to-four page outlines.
His screenwriting career experienced a decline for the rest of the decade, with films like
Showgirls,
An Alan Smithee Film: Burn Hollywood Burn, and
Jade. Afterward, he primarily withdrew from Hollywood, although he’s authored many books.
Hollywood Animal reveals the trajectory of Joe’s life in gripping detail, from his childhood, which he spent in a refugee camp, to a battle with a devastating cancer. It shows just how a struggling journalist wound up becoming the most successful screenwriter of all time, and how a man that had access to the most beautiful women in Hollywood ultimately decided to live with the love of his life in a small town in Ohio.
Joe had everything that Hollywood could offer. A combo of rebel and insider, he participated and saw the backstabbing, the fights, the deals, and all the drugs and the sex. However here, in his heartwrenching and candid memoir, we see the rest of his story. The inspiring account of the child of Hungarian immigrants that, against all odds, grows up to live the American Dream.
Above all, this is the story of a dad and a son, and the turbulent relationship which was a neverending cycle of heartbreak. This is an enthralling provocative memoir, and a moving celebration of the human spirit.
